Nightguards

Protect your teeth from nighttime grinding and clenching with a custom-fitted nightguard. Luminara Dental provides comfortable, durable sleep guards for patients in Stittsville, Kanata, and West Ottawa to prevent severe enamel wear, alleviate jaw pain, and preserve your beautiful smile.

Protect your smile while you sleep

Many people unconsciously grind or clench their teeth while sleeping, a condition known as bruxism. Over time, the immense pressure of grinding can wear down your natural enamel, cause teeth to chip or fracture, and lead to chronic jaw pain and morning headaches.

A custom nightguard is a simple, highly effective preventative appliance designed to protect your smile. At Luminara Dental, we craft perfectly fitted, low-profile nightguards that create a protective barrier between your upper and lower teeth, absorbing the harmful forces of grinding so you can wake up pain-free.

Why choose a custom nightguard?

Investing in a custom-crafted nightguard provides immediate relief and long-term protection for your oral health:

  • Prevents structural damage: By keeping your upper and lower teeth separated, a nightguard prevents the severe enamel wear, micro-fractures, and receding gums caused by heavy clenching.
  • Alleviates jaw and muscle pain: A properly adjusted guard helps relax the muscles in your jaw, significantly reducing TMJ (temporomandibular joint) discomfort, facial soreness, and tension headaches.
  • Protects your dental investments: If you have restorative or cosmetic work, such as porcelain veneers, custom crowns, or dental bridges, a nightguard is essential to protect the delicate ceramic from chipping under heavy nighttime pressure.
  • Unmatched comfort: Unlike bulky store-bought options, a custom guard is tailored to the exact contours of your mouth, making it far more comfortable, breathable, and secure while you sleep.

Relief for Stittsville and West Ottawa patients

Bruxism is often linked to daily stress, airway issues, or a misaligned bite. Our Stittsville dental team takes a comprehensive approach to your care. During your routine hygiene recall visits, we carefully examine your teeth for the telltale signs of grinding, such as flattened chewing surfaces or small chips at the edges of your teeth.

If we detect bruxism, we will recommend a custom nightguard as a conservative, non-invasive way to protect your teeth and improve your sleep quality.

The fitting process: Fast and comfortable

Getting a custom nightguard requires just two brief, comfortable visits to our clinic:

  1. Accurate Impressions: We take precise digital or physical impressions of your teeth to capture the exact shape of your bite.
  2. Custom Fabrication: Your impressions are sent to a specialized dental laboratory. They use durable, high-quality, BPA-free acrylic materials to craft a guard that is tailored to your specific grinding patterns (ranging from a hard acrylic to a dual-laminate material with a softer inside and rigid outside).
  3. The Final Fitting: Once your guard arrives, you return to our office. We check the fit, make any necessary micro-adjustments to ensure your bite is perfectly balanced, and send you home ready for a comfortable night's sleep.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How do I know if I need a nightguard?

Because bruxism usually happens while you sleep, you may not realize you are doing it. Common symptoms include waking up with a dull headache, a sore jaw, sensitive teeth, or a feeling of tension in your facial muscles. A sleeping partner may also hear you grinding your teeth at night. If you experience any of these, we can evaluate your teeth for wear.

Can't I just buy a boil-and-bite guard from the pharmacy?

Store-bought guards are a one-size-fits-all solution that usually falls short. They are typically made of soft, thick rubber that can actually encourage more chewing and clenching during the night. They are also bulky, making them uncomfortable to sleep in, and they do not properly support your jaw joints, which can worsen TMJ pain over time.

How do I clean and store my nightguard?

In the morning, gently brush your nightguard with a soft toothbrush and cool water (hot water can warp the acrylic). You can use a mild, non-abrasive soap, but avoid regular toothpaste as it can scratch the material. Store it in the ventilated case we provide, and bring it with you to your regular dental checkups so we can give it a professional clean in our ultrasonic bath and ensure it still fits perfectly.

faq

Asked and answered.

The things people ask on the phone before they book — written out properly, so you don't have to ask them.

Are you accepting new patients?

Yes — new patients of every age are welcome, and we're taking bookings now. Call (613) 836-1333 or email the office and we'll find you a time, usually within the same week.

What should I bring to my first visit?

  • Your insurance details, if you have coverage
  • A list of any medications and supplements you take
  • Recent x-rays from a previous dentist, if you can get them sent over
  • Anything you've been worrying about, written down — people forget once they're in the chair

If you don't have any of it, come anyway. We'll sort it out from here.

How long does a first appointment take?

Plan for about an hour. That covers a full exam, any x-rays we need, a periodontal check, an oral cancer screening, and time to actually talk through what we found. If a cleaning fits the same day, we'll do it — otherwise we'll book it close by.

Do you see children?

We do, and we're glad to book families together. A first visit for a young child is short and mostly about them getting comfortable in the room — counting teeth, looking at the tools, sitting in the chair. Nothing happens that we haven't explained to them first.

Do you accept my insurance?

We accept most traditional insurance plans — call the office and we'll confirm yours specifically. Our staff verifies your coverage, submits pre-estimates where it's useful to know the number in advance, and files your claims so you're reimbursed. One thing worth understanding: your policy is a contract between you and your insurer, not between us and them. We'll do everything we can to maximise what you get back, but the terms are theirs.

Will I know the cost before treatment starts?

Always. You get the options and the costs in writing, with your insurance portion estimated, before anything begins. If we find something unexpected mid-treatment, we stop and talk to you rather than carrying on and adding it to the bill.

How can I pay?

Cheque, cash, or major credit cards. You can also call the office to make a payment or to talk through your options if the timing is difficult — it's a conversation we have often and there's no awkwardness in it.

What if I have no insurance at all?

You're just as welcome. We'll give you the full cost up front and, where there's more than one clinically sound way to treat something, we'll tell you what each one costs and let you decide. Plenty of our patients pay out of pocket.
