Extractions

While our goal is always to preserve your natural teeth, sometimes an extraction is the best step toward protecting your overall oral health. At Luminara Dental, we provide gentle, comfortable tooth removal for patients in Stittsville, Kanata, and the Ottawa Valley.

Gentle and precise tooth removal

At Luminara Dental, we believe in conservative dentistry, meaning we do everything possible to save your natural teeth. However, when a tooth is severely damaged, infected, or causing structural issues for your jaw, an extraction may be the healthiest option. Our Stittsville team focuses on making this procedure as comfortable, swift, and stress-free as possible, ensuring you feel at ease from start to finish.

Why might you need a tooth extraction?

We carefully evaluate your mouth and will only recommend an extraction to protect your surrounding teeth and gums in situations such as:

  • Severe Decay or Trauma: When a tooth is fractured or decayed beyond what a filling or custom crown can successfully repair.
  • Advanced Periodontal Disease: If chronic gum disease has severely deteriorated the supporting jawbone, a tooth may become too loose to save.
  • Overcrowding: Removing a tooth can create the necessary space for orthodontic treatments to properly align your smile.
  • Impacted Wisdom Teeth: Third molars often lack the space to emerge properly, leading to pain, infection, or damage to adjacent healthy teeth.

Comfortable, collaborative care in West Ottawa

Your comfort and safety are our highest priorities. We routinely perform simple extractions right here in our Stittsville clinic in a calming, supportive environment.

For highly complex surgical cases, such as deeply impacted wisdom teeth, we leverage our collaborative team-based approach. We will refer you to a trusted oral surgeon in the Stittsville or Kanata area. We coordinate your care behind the scenes to ensure you receive the specialized treatment you need while remaining under our overall guidance.

The extraction process: What to expect

We take the anxiety out of tooth removal with a predictable, patient-focused approach:

  1. Assessment and X-rays: We take clear digital images to examine the tooth's roots and the surrounding bone to plan a safe, precise removal.
  2. Complete Numbing: We use highly effective local anesthesia to completely numb the area. You will feel some pressure during the procedure, but you should not feel any sharp pain.
  3. Gentle Removal: The tooth is carefully loosened and removed with specialized instruments designed to minimize trauma to the surrounding gum tissue.
  4. Socket Preservation: If you plan to replace the extracted tooth with a dental implant in the future, we can often place a bone graft immediately into the empty socket to preserve your jawbone density.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the recovery like after an extraction?

Most patients recover quickly within just a few days. We will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions before you leave. These guidelines typically include eating soft foods, avoiding drinking through a straw (to protect the healing blood clot), and keeping the area clean. Mild swelling is normal and can easily be managed with ice packs and over-the-counter pain relievers.

Do I need to replace my extracted tooth?

Unless it is a wisdom tooth or removed for orthodontic crowding, we highly recommend replacing an extracted tooth. Leaving a gap in your smile can cause surrounding teeth to shift out of alignment and lead to long-term jawbone loss. We offer excellent replacement options at our clinic, including dental bridges and implant restorations.

Will I be in pain during the procedure?

No. We ensure the entire area is deeply numb before we begin any work. While you may feel a pushing pressure or movement as the tooth is extracted, you will not feel pain. If you ever feel uncomfortable, we encourage you to raise your hand so we can pause and administer more anesthetic.

faq

Asked and answered.

The things people ask on the phone before they book — written out properly, so you don't have to ask them.

Are you accepting new patients?

Yes — new patients of every age are welcome, and we're taking bookings now. Call (613) 836-1333 or email the office and we'll find you a time, usually within the same week.

What should I bring to my first visit?

  • Your insurance details, if you have coverage
  • A list of any medications and supplements you take
  • Recent x-rays from a previous dentist, if you can get them sent over
  • Anything you've been worrying about, written down — people forget once they're in the chair

If you don't have any of it, come anyway. We'll sort it out from here.

How long does a first appointment take?

Plan for about an hour. That covers a full exam, any x-rays we need, a periodontal check, an oral cancer screening, and time to actually talk through what we found. If a cleaning fits the same day, we'll do it — otherwise we'll book it close by.

Do you see children?

We do, and we're glad to book families together. A first visit for a young child is short and mostly about them getting comfortable in the room — counting teeth, looking at the tools, sitting in the chair. Nothing happens that we haven't explained to them first.

Do you accept my insurance?

We accept most traditional insurance plans — call the office and we'll confirm yours specifically. Our staff verifies your coverage, submits pre-estimates where it's useful to know the number in advance, and files your claims so you're reimbursed. One thing worth understanding: your policy is a contract between you and your insurer, not between us and them. We'll do everything we can to maximise what you get back, but the terms are theirs.

Will I know the cost before treatment starts?

Always. You get the options and the costs in writing, with your insurance portion estimated, before anything begins. If we find something unexpected mid-treatment, we stop and talk to you rather than carrying on and adding it to the bill.

How can I pay?

Cheque, cash, or major credit cards. You can also call the office to make a payment or to talk through your options if the timing is difficult — it's a conversation we have often and there's no awkwardness in it.

What if I have no insurance at all?

You're just as welcome. We'll give you the full cost up front and, where there's more than one clinically sound way to treat something, we'll tell you what each one costs and let you decide. Plenty of our patients pay out of pocket.
