Mouthguards
Protect your smile on the ice, field, or court with a custom-fitted sports mouthguard. Luminara Dental provides durable, highly comfortable mouthguards for athletes of all ages in Stittsville, Kanata, and West Ottawa, ensuring maximum protection for your teeth and gums during impact sports.

Protect your smile in the game
Whether you or your child play hockey, soccer, basketball, or martial arts, protecting your teeth should be as routine as putting on a helmet or shin guards. A sudden impact to the face can easily result in chipped, broken, or even knocked-out teeth, leading to painful dental emergencies and the need for extensive restorative work like extractions or dental implants.
A custom sports mouthguard acts as a crucial shock absorber, diffusing the force of an impact to protect your teeth, gums, lips, and jaw. At Luminara Dental, we craft premium mouthguards that fit securely and comfortably, allowing you to focus entirely on your game.
Why choose a custom-fitted mouthguard?
While store-bought "boil-and-bite" mouthguards are inexpensive, they are notoriously bulky, uncomfortable, and provide inferior protection. A custom mouthguard crafted by our Stittsville dental team offers unparalleled benefits:
- Superior Protection: Custom guards are made from precise impressions of your exact bite, providing a snug fit that won't dislodge upon impact.
- Breathe and Speak Easily: Because they are tailored to the unique contours of your mouth, custom guards are much thinner and less intrusive. You can easily communicate with your teammates and breathe deeply without gagging.
- Tear-Resistant Durability: We use high-quality, resilient materials that can withstand heavy biting forces and last through the toughest sports seasons.
- Cost-Effective Insurance: Investing in a well-fitting custom mouthguard is far less expensive than treating a severe dental injury.
Supporting athletes in Stittsville and West Ottawa
We are proud to help keep our local athletes safe. We highly recommend custom mouthguards for children, teenagers, and adults who participate in any sport where there is a risk of contact or falling.
For growing children who are constantly losing baby teeth and gaining permanent ones, we can monitor the fit of their mouthguard during their routine hygiene recall appointments and let you know when it is time for a replacement to accommodate their changing smile.
The custom fitting process
Getting a custom mouthguard is quick, entirely painless, and requires just two brief visits to our clinic:
- Accurate Impressions: We take precise digital or physical impressions of your upper teeth.
- Custom Fabrication: The impressions are sent to a specialized dental laboratory where your mouthguard is molded using durable, protective materials. (You can often even choose the color to match your team's uniform!)
- The Final Fitting: You return to our office to try on the mouthguard. We ensure it fits snugly, comfortably, and doesn't interfere with your bite or breathing.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is the difference between a sports mouthguard and a nightguard?
While they look similar, they serve entirely different purposes. A sports mouthguard is made of a softer, thicker material designed to absorb sudden, heavy impacts from the outside. A nightguard is typically made of a rigid or dual-laminate material designed to protect your teeth from the slow, grinding forces of your own jaw while you sleep. You should never use a sports guard for sleeping, or a nightguard for sports.
How do I clean and store my mouthguard?
After every use, rinse your mouthguard with cool water (never hot water, as it can warp the shape). You should gently brush it with a soft toothbrush and non-abrasive soap or toothpaste. Store it in a sturdy, ventilated case to allow it to dry and prevent bacterial growth. Keep it out of direct sunlight or hot cars.
Can I wear a mouthguard if I have braces?
Yes, and it is highly recommended! A sudden impact with braces can cause severe lacerations to your lips and cheeks, and damage the brackets. We can create a special custom mouthguard designed to fit securely over your orthodontic appliances while still allowing room for your teeth to move as your treatment progresses.

Asked and answered.
The things people ask on the phone before they book — written out properly, so you don't have to ask them.
Are you accepting new patients?
Yes — new patients of every age are welcome, and we're taking bookings now. Call (613) 836-1333 or email the office and we'll find you a time, usually within the same week.
What should I bring to my first visit?
- Your insurance details, if you have coverage
- A list of any medications and supplements you take
- Recent x-rays from a previous dentist, if you can get them sent over
- Anything you've been worrying about, written down — people forget once they're in the chair
If you don't have any of it, come anyway. We'll sort it out from here.
How long does a first appointment take?
Plan for about an hour. That covers a full exam, any x-rays we need, a periodontal check, an oral cancer screening, and time to actually talk through what we found. If a cleaning fits the same day, we'll do it — otherwise we'll book it close by.
Do you see children?
We do, and we're glad to book families together. A first visit for a young child is short and mostly about them getting comfortable in the room — counting teeth, looking at the tools, sitting in the chair. Nothing happens that we haven't explained to them first.
Do you accept my insurance?
We accept most traditional insurance plans — call the office and we'll confirm yours specifically. Our staff verifies your coverage, submits pre-estimates where it's useful to know the number in advance, and files your claims so you're reimbursed. One thing worth understanding: your policy is a contract between you and your insurer, not between us and them. We'll do everything we can to maximise what you get back, but the terms are theirs.
Will I know the cost before treatment starts?
Always. You get the options and the costs in writing, with your insurance portion estimated, before anything begins. If we find something unexpected mid-treatment, we stop and talk to you rather than carrying on and adding it to the bill.
How can I pay?
Cheque, cash, or major credit cards. You can also call the office to make a payment or to talk through your options if the timing is difficult — it's a conversation we have often and there's no awkwardness in it.
What if I have no insurance at all?
You're just as welcome. We'll give you the full cost up front and, where there's more than one clinically sound way to treat something, we'll tell you what each one costs and let you decide. Plenty of our patients pay out of pocket.
