Crowns

Custom dental crowns repair, protect, and strengthen damaged teeth while beautifully blending with your natural smile. Luminara Dental provides durable, natural-looking crowns for patients in Stittsville, Kanata, and the Ottawa Valley, helping you preserve your natural teeth for years to come.

Restore and protect your natural teeth

When a tooth is significantly damaged by decay, severe wear, or trauma, a standard filling may not provide enough structural support to save it. A custom dental crown (often called a "cap") is designed to completely encase the visible portion of the tooth, restoring its original shape, size, strength, and appearance.

At Luminara Dental, we craft high-quality crowns that protect your oral health while perfectly matching the aesthetics of your natural smile.

Why might you need a dental crown?

We take a conservative approach to dentistry and will always recommend a crown when it is the most reliable way to save your natural tooth. Common reasons for needing a crown include:

  • Severe decay: To repair and seal a tooth with a cavity that is too large for a traditional filling.
  • Fractures and cracks: To hold a weakened, fractured, or cracked tooth together and prevent further damage or pain.
  • After root canal therapy: To protect a tooth after the infected pulp has been removed, as the remaining structure often becomes more brittle.
  • Cosmetic enhancements: To cover severely discolored, misshapen, or worn down teeth as part of a smile transformation (similar to the results of porcelain veneers).
  • Tooth replacement: To securely cover a dental implant or serve as the strong anchor for a dental bridge.

Beautiful, durable materials for a seamless smile

We use the highest quality dental materials to ensure your restoration is both exceptionally strong and highly aesthetic. Depending on the location of the tooth and your specific biting forces, we typically recommend advanced ceramic or porcelain materials (like Zirconia or E.max).

These materials mimic the natural light-reflecting properties and translucency of real enamel, meaning your new crown will blend flawlessly with your surrounding teeth.

The crown placement process

Getting a custom crown at our Stittsville clinic is a comfortable, straightforward process that usually takes two visits:

  1. Preparation: During your first visit, we ensure you are completely numb and comfortable. We then gently shape the enamel of the damaged tooth to create room for the new crown to fit securely over it.
  2. Impressions and Protection: We take precise digital or physical impressions of the prepared tooth. These are sent to our trusted dental laboratory where your custom restoration is crafted. We will place a temporary crown to protect your tooth while you wait.
  3. Final Placement: Once your permanent crown is ready, you will return to our office. We remove the temporary, meticulously check the physical fit, your bite alignment, and the shade of the new crown, and then permanently cement it into place.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Does getting a crown hurt?

No. Your comfort is our top priority. We use highly effective local anesthesia to completely numb the tooth and surrounding gum tissue before we begin any preparation. You may experience some mild sensitivity to hot or cold for a few days after the procedure, but this is normal and subsides quickly.

How long does a dental crown last?

With excellent daily care, a high-quality crown can last 10 to 15 years, and often much longer. While the crown itself cannot decay, the natural tooth structure underneath the gum line still can. Maintaining your daily brushing and flossing routine, along with attending your regular hygiene recall visits, is essential for longevity. If you grind your teeth at night, we may recommend a custom nightguard to protect your new crown from excessive wear.

Will my crown look natural?

Absolutely. We take great care in shade-matching your new crown to your adjacent teeth. By using advanced ceramic and porcelain materials, your restoration will look, feel, and function exactly like a healthy natural tooth.

faq

Asked and answered.

The things people ask on the phone before they book — written out properly, so you don't have to ask them.

Are you accepting new patients?

Yes — new patients of every age are welcome, and we're taking bookings now. Call (613) 836-1333 or email the office and we'll find you a time, usually within the same week.

What should I bring to my first visit?

  • Your insurance details, if you have coverage
  • A list of any medications and supplements you take
  • Recent x-rays from a previous dentist, if you can get them sent over
  • Anything you've been worrying about, written down — people forget once they're in the chair

If you don't have any of it, come anyway. We'll sort it out from here.

How long does a first appointment take?

Plan for about an hour. That covers a full exam, any x-rays we need, a periodontal check, an oral cancer screening, and time to actually talk through what we found. If a cleaning fits the same day, we'll do it — otherwise we'll book it close by.

Do you see children?

We do, and we're glad to book families together. A first visit for a young child is short and mostly about them getting comfortable in the room — counting teeth, looking at the tools, sitting in the chair. Nothing happens that we haven't explained to them first.

Do you accept my insurance?

We accept most traditional insurance plans — call the office and we'll confirm yours specifically. Our staff verifies your coverage, submits pre-estimates where it's useful to know the number in advance, and files your claims so you're reimbursed. One thing worth understanding: your policy is a contract between you and your insurer, not between us and them. We'll do everything we can to maximise what you get back, but the terms are theirs.

Will I know the cost before treatment starts?

Always. You get the options and the costs in writing, with your insurance portion estimated, before anything begins. If we find something unexpected mid-treatment, we stop and talk to you rather than carrying on and adding it to the bill.

How can I pay?

Cheque, cash, or major credit cards. You can also call the office to make a payment or to talk through your options if the timing is difficult — it's a conversation we have often and there's no awkwardness in it.

What if I have no insurance at all?

You're just as welcome. We'll give you the full cost up front and, where there's more than one clinically sound way to treat something, we'll tell you what each one costs and let you decide. Plenty of our patients pay out of pocket.
