Strengthen and protect your natural enamel
Every day, the enamel on your teeth undergoes a continuous cycle of demineralization and remineralization. When you eat, naturally occurring bacteria in your mouth produce acids that strip away essential minerals from your enamel.
Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that reverses this damage. It acts like a shield, drawing minerals like calcium and phosphate back into the tooth structure to rebuild weakened enamel and make your teeth more resistant to future acid attacks. At Luminara Dental, we offer professional-grade fluoride treatments to give your smile the highest level of protection.
The benefits of professional fluoride treatments
While fluoride is found in many over-the-counter toothpastes and local water supplies, a professional application at our clinic provides a highly concentrated, therapeutic dose with several key benefits:
- Prevents tooth decay: By hardening the enamel, fluoride significantly reduces your risk of developing cavities and needing fillings.
- Reverses early decay: If a cavity is just beginning to form (known as a micro-cavity), a strong fluoride treatment can actually remineralize the area and halt the decay process entirely.
- Reduces tooth sensitivity: Strengthening the enamel helps cover microscopic tubules in the teeth, which can drastically reduce sensitivity to hot and cold foods.
- Cost-effective prevention: Investing in a quick preventative fluoride treatment today can save you from requiring more extensive, costly restorative work in the future.
Preventative care for all ages in West Ottawa
Preventative dentistry is the foundation of a healthy smile. We highly recommend fluoride treatments for children whose permanent teeth are still developing. For the ultimate defense against childhood cavities, we often pair fluoride applications with dental sealants.
However, fluoride is not just for kids. We frequently recommend professional fluoride for adults in Stittsville and Kanata who have a history of frequent cavities, receding gums, dry mouth (which reduces protective saliva), or those wearing braces.
A quick, comfortable application
Getting a fluoride treatment at Luminara Dental is fast, completely painless, and typically completed at the end of your routine hygiene recall visit.
- Cleaning: First, we ensure your teeth are thoroughly cleaned and free of plaque.
- Application: We apply a professional fluoride varnish directly to the surfaces of your teeth using a small, soft brush. The varnish sets almost instantly when it comes into contact with your saliva.
- Protection: The varnish remains on your teeth for several hours, deeply penetrating the enamel to provide long-lasting protection.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Is professional fluoride safe?
Yes. Professional fluoride treatments are entirely safe and are endorsed by major dental associations worldwide as a critical component of oral health. Because our varnish is precisely applied by a dental professional, you receive exactly the right therapeutic amount without any risk of overexposure.
Can adults benefit from fluoride treatments?
Absolutely. While fluoride is essential for developing teeth in children, adults can greatly benefit from the extra enamel strength. If you have existing crowns or bridges, fluoride helps protect the vulnerable natural tooth structure around the edges of those restorations.
What should I avoid after a fluoride treatment?
Because we use a sticky varnish that adheres to the teeth, you can usually eat and drink immediately after leaving our clinic. However, to ensure the fluoride has enough time to fully absorb, we recommend avoiding hot liquids (like coffee or soup), sticky or crunchy foods, and brushing or flossing for at least 4 to 6 hours after your appointment.

Asked and answered.
The things people ask on the phone before they book — written out properly, so you don't have to ask them.
Are you accepting new patients?
Yes — new patients of every age are welcome, and we're taking bookings now. Call (613) 836-1333 or email the office and we'll find you a time, usually within the same week.
What should I bring to my first visit?
- Your insurance details, if you have coverage
- A list of any medications and supplements you take
- Recent x-rays from a previous dentist, if you can get them sent over
- Anything you've been worrying about, written down — people forget once they're in the chair
If you don't have any of it, come anyway. We'll sort it out from here.
How long does a first appointment take?
Plan for about an hour. That covers a full exam, any x-rays we need, a periodontal check, an oral cancer screening, and time to actually talk through what we found. If a cleaning fits the same day, we'll do it — otherwise we'll book it close by.
Do you see children?
We do, and we're glad to book families together. A first visit for a young child is short and mostly about them getting comfortable in the room — counting teeth, looking at the tools, sitting in the chair. Nothing happens that we haven't explained to them first.
Do you accept my insurance?
We accept most traditional insurance plans — call the office and we'll confirm yours specifically. Our staff verifies your coverage, submits pre-estimates where it's useful to know the number in advance, and files your claims so you're reimbursed. One thing worth understanding: your policy is a contract between you and your insurer, not between us and them. We'll do everything we can to maximise what you get back, but the terms are theirs.
Will I know the cost before treatment starts?
Always. You get the options and the costs in writing, with your insurance portion estimated, before anything begins. If we find something unexpected mid-treatment, we stop and talk to you rather than carrying on and adding it to the bill.
How can I pay?
Cheque, cash, or major credit cards. You can also call the office to make a payment or to talk through your options if the timing is difficult — it's a conversation we have often and there's no awkwardness in it.
What if I have no insurance at all?
You're just as welcome. We'll give you the full cost up front and, where there's more than one clinically sound way to treat something, we'll tell you what each one costs and let you decide. Plenty of our patients pay out of pocket.
